Former President Jerry John Rawlings, has denied reports making rounds that he has criticised Ministers and people signing a petition book to President Mahama to give the Montie three contemnors a presidential pardon.
A statement signed by the former president stated that such comments circulating on social media are “false and a total fabrication.”
Rawlings was quoted on social media as mocking persons who are signing a petition to have the President of Ghana activate his powers in Article 72 of the 1992 Constitution to give them presidential pardon, Salifu Maase popularly known as Mugabe and two presenters, Alistair Nelson and Godwin Ako Gunn after they were convicted by the Supreme Court (SC) for contempt.
He is alleged to have suggested persons signing the petition to be sent to the Ridge Psychiatry Hospital to find out if they are in the best frame of mind.
“Mahama is never going to accept a petition signed by these people. Never at all,” he said.
The petition book was opened by pro-government group Research and Advocacy Platform (RAP) to collect signatures of Ghanaians to implore the president to free Salifu Maase aka Mugabe, Alistair Nelson and Godwin Ako Gunn.
The three were sentenced to four month imprisonment by the Supreme Court following contempt proceedings against them.
The contempt proceedings came after the three threatened the Supreme Court judges who sat on the Abu Ramadan and Gary Nimako versus the Electoral Commission case.
They also threatened to rape the Chief Justice.
