The statistics revealed that domestic violence cases against men and women have experienced a reduction.

The statistics revealed that about 13,465 women also reported domestic violence cases against their spouses last year as against 15,207 the previous year.

The Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit (DOWSU) of the Ghana Police Service has said a total of 2,807 men reported domestic abuse cases against their wives last year as against 3,143 the previous year.

The DOWSU National Coordinator, Chief Superintendent Rev. Laurencia Wilhelmina Akorli who made this known to The Ghanaian Times said some of the reported cases were defilement, rape, attempted rape, sodomy, incest, kidnapping, murder, abortion, death threat, bigamy, causing harm, child abuse, abduction, and child trafficking.

According to her, even though men were coming out in their numbers to report on cases, those of women were still higher.

She said her outfit will be engaging stakeholders such as traditional rulers and religious bodies to ensure a reduction in the cases.

In total DOVVSU recorded 15,749 cases in 2015 as against 17,778 recorded in 2014, she said.

On the way forward, the DOVVSU Coordinator said the Chief Justice must establish more Domestic Violence courts to ensure that cases are dealt with quickly.

She added that there were only three of the DV courts in Accra, Tema and Kumasi, a situation which is affecting the speed with which cases are being dealt with.
