Speaker assures Parliament will pass RTI bill .

The right to information is a fundamental human right guaranteed by the country’s 1992Constitution and recognised as a right under the International Convention on Human Rights. The bill will give substance to Article 21 (1) (f) of the constitution which state “All persons shall have the right to information subject to such qualifications and laws as are necessary for a democratic society”.

The speaker of parliament, Edward Doe Adjaho has assured the public that parliament is committed to passing the Right to Information (RTI) bill.

The bill was first introduced to the house in February 2010. ... The bill was subsequently reintroduced with modifications in the house in November 2013. I must confirm that this house is committed to critically examining the 52 pages of amendments to the Right to Information bill before concluding its work at the end of its next meeting so that we can pass a bill that can stand the test of time,” he said

The RTI bill is one of the oldest before parliament which is expected to be passed before recess.

The Ghana Journalist Association together with other civil society bodies has called on parliament on several occasion to pass the bill since it has been in parliament for long.

Giving his closing remarks at the second meeting of the House on Friday, August 5, Mr Adjaho stated that Parliament is examining the 52 pages of the bill and assured that the bill will be passed.
